Categorical Internal Medicine (3 Years) St. Mary’s offers a total of 36 positions:
In our program, we appreciate the remarkable diversity of modern internal medicine. By offering a flexible curriculum and diverse training sites (primarily St. Mary’s Medical Center and San Francisco General Hospital at UCSF), we offer our residents the opportunity to mold their educational experiences to career paths in primary care, Hospitalist medicine and the medical specialties. St. Mary’s is a core-training site for 3rd year internal medicine clerks from Creighton University, and hosts UCSF medical students on a variety of rotations. The presence of students, the dedication of the faculty, and the burgeoning interest in clinical research ensure an academic environment in collegial atmosphere. We have an excellent track record of placing our residents in competitive academic fellowships, including such prestigious institutions as UCSF, Stanford, UC Davis, and Harvard. (Click here to see the destinations of our recent graduates.) Many of our graduates still practice at St. Mary’s and several have become Chiefs of Staff. The Medical Center offers technical support and income guarantees to graduates who wish to establish a practice in San Francisco. Our graduates are highly respected in the San Francisco community, and virtually have their pick of employment opportunities after graduation.

St. Mary’s curriculum is designed to educate residents to be expert general internists in the classical model of the internist-consultant diagnostician. This requires rigorous training in critical care, the medical subspecialties, general ward medicine, and primary care. At all levels of training we stress the pathophysiology of disease, the ability to evaluate the literature and the practice of evidence-based medicine.
