No single residency program is right for all medical students. Our programs are based in a prestigious community hospital with deep roots to the community it serves. Affiliations with such academic centers of excellence such as the University of California of San Francisco, Alameda County Medical Center and Stanford University Hospital ensure well-rounded training in diverse settings. You will spend at least 2 months during internship year and 6 months during the residency years at these outside institutions.

We emphasize a humane approach to medical education that fosters mutually respectful learning among faculty, residents and students. Our program will give you the experience of providing care to both the medically undeserved and to individuals fortunate enough to have health insurance.

The intimate atmosphere, professionalism of the residents and dedication of the faculty permit the Program to individualize the curriculum to support your specific career and personal goals. Since the core training includes medical specialties, your seven electives are free to pursue research or scholarly activity, and will provide you with additional training in specialty medicine or ambulatory care.

We seek and attract individuals who remain patient-care advocates and lifelong learners well after graduation; our physicians respect the mission to care for the medically undeserved and value collegial teamwork with fellow health care professionals

As an intern at St Mary’s you will have the opportunity to care for patients, to learn and to teach. Medical students from UCSF and other medical schools are present on most rotations. St. Mary’s is a core site for Creighton University’s junior clerkship in medicine.

Over the past three years, approximately one third of St. Mary's Internal Medicine graduates have gone into primary care, one third have gone into Hospitalist medicine, and one third have received fellowships in medical subspecialties or public health. These include fellowships at Stanford, UCSF, UC Davis and Columbia University. Over two thirds of our graduates have settled in the San Francisco Bay Area or in Northern California. On average, each graduating class sees two residents joining practices that admit patients to St. Mary's. The Hospital provides support and salary guarantees to start or join a local practice.
